The legal profession is at a crossroads. Economic globalization and the accompanying international business framework have forced many in the profession out of community based firms. The debate continues as to whether local or even regional law firms have a continuing business reason to exist. At the same time, the business models for the new, international mega firms continue to evolve. The legal business environment struggles between retaining the remnants of the small, collegial, community focused environment and embracing the sterile metrics of large corporate enterprise.

There is little doubt that the principal measure of legal success has shifted from reputation to revenue. Few associates join their first firm with any expectation that it will be their last. The profession is characterized by uncertainty and change. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that many of our colleagues are some of the unhappiest of all the worlds’ professionals.

Yet, most of us undertook our legal careers not for the money, but for the expectation that we could make a meaningful contribution to the world, in a respected profession, while living a decent life supporting our families and loved ones.

Coaching Counsel was founded by a lawyer, Timothy Tosta. Tim founded Coaching Counsel to coach, support, train and educate lawyers and other business professionals.
